Call for Applications | REFOREST Africa PhD Programme
Applications are now open for 20 fully funded PhD Forest Sciences scholarships under the Regional Research School in Forest Sciences Programme (REFOREST Africa PhD Programme).
The programme is coordinated by the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Tourism (CFWT), Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Tanzania, and is financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
The PhD programme will commence in April/May 2026 and will run for a maximum period of four years.

Programme Background
The REFOREST Africa PhD Programme aims to enhance the quality, relevance, and reach of forest research in Eastern and Southern Africa, with a strong focus on transforming livelihoods, forest governance, and environmental sustainability.
The programme seeks to:
- Strengthen capacity and quality of forestry education
- Produce PhD-level scientists capable of addressing complex forest management challenges
- Facilitate regional networking, partnerships, and knowledge management
- Support evidence-based solutions for sustainable forest and landscape management
Partner Institutions
The programme is implemented through a strong regional and international partnership involving:
- Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) – Tanzania (Lead Institution)
- Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) – Sweden
- Eduardo Mondlane University – Mozambique
- National University of Rwanda – Rwanda
- Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Natural Resources, Hawassa University – Ethiopia
- Makerere University – Uganda
This partnership ensures high academic standards, international exposure, and strong regional relevance.
Programme Track Record
During the first phase (January 2020 – March 2025) of the Sida-supported programme:
- 18 PhD students successfully completed their studies
- All graduates returned to their home countries
- Graduates are currently employed in forestry and related professional roles
Building on this success, the programme is now inviting applications for its next cohort.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a Master’s degree in Forestry or allied sciences from a recognized and reputable university
- Be a citizen or refugee of one of the following countries:
- Ethiopia
- Mozambique
- Rwanda
- Tanzania
- Uganda
- Demonstrate proficiency in English, the language of instruction for the programme
- Be available to commit to a four-year PhD training programme
Gender Equity and Inclusion
Since its inception, the REFOREST Africa Programme has been gender-sensitive and actively promotes the participation of female candidates. Women are strongly encouraged to apply, and special consideration will be given to female applicants with specific support needs.
Structure of the PhD Forest Sciences Programme
The PhD Forest Sciences Degree Programme consists of:
- One year of coursework
- Three years of research, conducted primarily in the candidate’s home country
- Publication of research findings in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals
- Thesis writing and defense prior to graduation
Each PhD candidate will be supervised by a joint team of three senior academics, drawn from:
- Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA)
- Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU)
- A partner university in the candidate’s home country
Research Themes
Applicants must prepare and submit a concept note aligned with one of the following thematic areas:
- Theme 1: Commercial Forestry and Bio-economy
- Theme 2: Sustainable Natural Forest Management
- Theme 3: Agroforestry
- Theme 4: Climate Change
- Theme 5: Biodiversity and Ecosystems
The concept note should demonstrate relevance to regional forestry challenges and contribute to sustainable development outcomes.
Scholarship Coverage
The scholarship covers a maximum of four years and includes:
- Tuition fees
- Monthly stipend
- Approved research costs
- Travel expenses, including economy-class international tickets
- Health insurance while studying in Tanzania
This comprehensive support enables scholars to focus fully on their academic and research work.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit an application letter accompanied by the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) with a recent passport-size photograph, and certified copies of academic transcripts and certificates
- Concept note (maximum 4 pages, single-spaced, font size 12, with up to 10 recent references)
- Evidence of English language proficiency
- Letter of support from the applicant’s current institution or employer
- National Identity document
