Applications are open for the Kevin Johnson Presidential Scholarship 2026. The African American Mayors Association (AAMA) is proud to offer five scholarship opportunities for (2) undergraduate and (3) graduate students currently enrolled at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) who are pursuing majors in policy, governance, technology, political science, healthcare and related fields.
This scholarship aims to support and empower the next generation of leaders dedicated to shaping public policy, driving technological innovation, and fostering inclusive governance. Scholarship recipients will attend the AAMA Scholars Summit during AAMA’s Annual Conference in Washington, DC, April 9-10, 2026. Travel costs will be covered.
Scholarship
- A $5,000 scholarship to support tuition and academic expenses.
- Mentorship opportunities with African American mayors and other leaders in policy, governance, healthcare, and technology.
- Invitations to events, conferences, and networking opportunities within the African American Mayors Association.
- Recognition as a scholar committed to advancing leadership and innovation in policy and governance.
Eligibility
- Must be a full-time student currently enrolled at an accredited HBCU
- Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a 4-point scale)
- Must be pursuing a major in political science, public policy, governance, technology, healthcare, or a closely related field
- Strong academic record and commitment to community engagement.
- A personal statement outlining career aspirations and the impact of their work on their community and society.

Applications should include:
- A current resume.
- A 2-minute video personal statement describing career goals and interest in public policy, governance, technology, healthcare or political science.
- A letter of recommendation from a professor or community leader.
